Finding things you actually enjoy sober — a 39-year-old's reset

Table tennis, golf, Kun Khmer, the camera. How I'm rebuilding a life that's fun without a drink in my hand.

Sober, you discover how much of your "fun" was just the drink wearing a costume. Strip that out and there's a quiet panic: what do I actually enjoy?

For me it's been table tennis, golf, Kun Khmer training in Cambodia, and the camera. None of them needed a drink — I'd just stopped doing them because the drink was easier than effort.

The reset at 39 isn't finding new things. It's going back and picking up the ones you dropped, sober this time, and being surprised they still work. Kiana literally puts them in my calendar so I can't skip them. That's not soft — that's the system that makes Step Two real.
